Hope Spot 5 – Exciting news for you

From Ethiopia to Australia, here’s some exciting news for you!

I’m writing early this week
because there is exciting news
to share with you, that just can’t wait!

  1. Radio broadcast times for Interview with Sophie Gebreyes, Head of LWF Ethiopia, who visited Australia in August

  1. Message from St Peters Lutheran Church in Hobart.

  1. A voice from the past that still speaks loudly today

There’s no more than 4 minutes of reading, and I guarantee it’s worth it!

Your ALWS work in Ethiopia on radio

Through the start of this year, I’ve shared updates on the 635 metre canal our ALWS family supported building in Amhara Ethiopia.

Sophie Gebreyes leads the LWF team you support in Ethiopia, and when she visited Australia last year she recorded some radio broadcasts about your ALWS work.

These will go to air in coming days, and you can also listen to a non-broadcast version.

Thanksgiving from Hobart

Dear Christian friends,

On the 19-20th February 2025 St Peters Lutheran church sent an online donation of $250 to ALWS for the Bonegilla commemoration.

Several of our older members passed through this Camp on their way to Tasmania, so wished to give a thank offering for the wonderful welcome and support they received.

Bonegilla beginnings

You can find out more about our ALWS beginnings at Bonegilla Migrant Centre in 1950 here, and those who started it, including Lutheran Pastor Bruno Muetzelfeldt (on the right)

In the eulogy for Pastor Bruno, former LWF Director Brian Neldner noted:

Bruno saw Lutheran World Service providing services neither UN nor government could offer, such as a people-to-people approach, and an inclusive concept, which was not restricted by preselection categories of people or regulations of the UN system.

Bruno also expressed concern that the world forgot suffering all too quickly, and easily moved on to a new drama leaving short those who were no longer a headline.

Those words are from many years ago, but they still resonate for your ALWS work:

  • you support a people-to-people approach
  • your approach is inclusive of all
  • the world still forgets suffering too quickly – but you don’t

This year marks 75 years of ALWS service. In thanksgiving, we’re aiming to support 75,000 children with school, food and safety. Find out more.

Thank you for being such a vital part of everything you’ve read in today’s HOPE Spot. This is why you are a blessing ALWayS!
