Rakhine Crisis – a challenge we’re taking on …

You may have seen news reports that 427,000 people (mostly Muslim) fled Rakhine State in Myanmar (mostly Buddhist) into Bangladesh. 25,632 people have been displaced within Rakhine since the August 25th security incident.

This is a complex crisis, but one thing is clear - hundreds of thousands of people face great suffering and danger.

The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) team in Myanmar, along with Christian Aid, are planning to lead the response of churches worldwide through ACT Alliance.

 What has happened

  • 1.1 million Rohingya people live in Rakhine in Myanmar
  • Rohingya people are mostly Muslim - Myanmar is Buddhist
  • on Friday 25 August, the Arakhine Rohingya Salvation Army attacked three towns in northern Rakhine
  • the government of Myanmar has responded militarily
  • since 25 August, 164,000 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh
  • Bangladesh is currently 1/3 under water from floods

What we can do

Our ALWS experience responding to emergencies shows us people will need lifesaving essentials that may include:

  • Shelter
  • Food
  • Water and sanitation needs
  • Basic household essentials
  • Support to earn income

Access is difficult, and challenges complex.

The Christian community in Myanmar is caught in the middle of the Muslim and Buddhist populations … but has the capacity and will to help their neighbours.

ALWS and Myanmar

LWF has worked in Myanmar since 2008.

In 2015, 128,903 people were helped in 18 projects.

Our ALWS family has supported emergency action in Myanmar in 2013, 2015 and 2016.

ALWS team member Lauren Kathage worked with the LWF team in Myanmar during 2015.

Given this history of working together, and seeing people’s desperate needs, ALWS stands ready to again take your care to the people of Myanmar.

The crisis in Myanmar is challenging, and our response requires wisdom and prayer.

It comes on top of responding to floods in Nepal, and caring for refugees fleeing countries like South Sudan and Somalia.

Our ALWS plan is to work through LWF Myanmar to help up to 2,000 families in Sittwe, Rathedaung, Ponnakyun, Kyauttaw and Mrauk-U townships in Rakhine State.
