Parable of the Donkey
Hay’ there!
You may be surprised to ‘ear from me.
People look at us donkeys and think all we’re good for is the work no one else will do.
“If it’s hard and heavy – give it to the donkey!”
We never get to be the hero, we just do the work, like in The Good Samaritan story in the Bible.
Yes, the Samaritan was a good person. He stopped in a dangerous place to help a man bashed by robbers. Got him to safety and gave his own money to help.
But - and it’s a big but (no comments about my butt!) - people forget about the donkey!
How would the Samaritan be there, if not for the donkey?
And who carried the injured man to safety? Through the heat and dirt and danger? How ‘bray’ve he must be!
But does anyone ever talk about ‘The Good Donkey’? Neigh :(
That’s OK. Folks like you and me know good things happen when you’re humble enough to do the hard work. Even if no one sees it.
And we know that if things get tough, it can help to be ‘stubborn as a mule’ to get past the challenges.
So, don’t ass-ume the ‘donkey work’ you do through ALWS isn’t important. It is. Nothing happens without you.
To ‘burro’ an ALWS saying, you’re a blessing ALWayS!
- Donkey
P.S. Who carried a young mum-to-be all the way from Nazareth to Bethlehem to give birth to the Saviour? And who dodged palm fronds to bring that baby-grown-up into Jerusalem to win salvation? 'Donkey work' in deed(s)!
Your donkey work in Ethiopia
You don’t want to be a donkey in Ethiopia. Here, you’re not a pampered pet, but a vital ‘machine’, doing the back-breaking work too heavy for humans. A donkey-dozer.
You can see why donkeys are needed when you hear about the amazing ALWS project I invite you to join in Amhara region in Ethiopia – a 635 metres long irrigation channel!
939m3 of dirt has to be removed.
45 tonnes of cement brought in.
520m3 of stone and sand used for construction.
Without this irrigation channel, water has to be transported in drums on donkey carts.
GOOD NEWS!
The local community in Amhara have already rolled up their sleeves, to pitch in with the heavy work loading their donkeys.
Our opportunity now is to add Australian energy, and work together to complete the irrigation channel by Christmas!
Your donation by Friday 27 September can kick-start the remaining work in Quarter 4.
You will help pay for cement, stone and supplies, and also the work of 12 stone masons, and Cash for Work labourers, to construct the channel, including 2 flumes – elevated walled ‘bridges’ - where the irrigation channel has to cross gullies.
Yes, it’s ‘donkey work’ – hard and hot and humble ...
... but it’s hands-on helping that will bring real hope.
